4/8/06-4/15/06 - SPRINK BREAK AT NEW ORLEANS!! not party but to serve
Dear family and friends,
As you all know, the impact of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was
the biggest natural disaster in our country and although the target of force
lingered over the Gulf Coast, people all over the country was affected and moved.
I personally came in contact with people who were affected with the disaster as
well as those who had families in those parts. We pray for victims and even
send money, but there is no comparison to the opportunity of serving them face
to face through physical labor. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted
to be a part of the continuing effort.
At last the
opportunity has come! As part of Asian American Christian Fellowship (AACF) in
Cal State Long Beach, I have the privilege of going to New Orleans from April 8
to April 15 through an effort sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. This
spring break, thousands of university students will head to the Gulf Coast not
to party, but to serve people in need. Students from fraternities, sororities,
athletic teams, religious groups, churches, and other student clubs will travel
to New Orleans, Louisiana and Pass Christian, Mississippi to help with the
ongoing Katrina relief effort. So far
over 7,000 students and volunteers have registered.
In New Orleans, Campus Crusade has many different
partnerships. Tulane University has requested our help to clean out professor’s
homes and public schools nearby to the university. The University of New
Orleans has asked us to plant new trees around campus. Desire Street Ministries
in the ninth ward needs help to clean out 800 homes that were flooded. Most of
our work will be cleaning up sites, working with construction, food preparation
and volunteering in relief centers.
As a nursing student, I know that this experience will teach
me valuable lessons that can never be found in my three-inch textbooks. The
trip to New Orleans is more than just a service project. It is about showing
compassion and giving hope to people through Christ. Two things that will make
this trip possible is through prayer support and financial support. Prayer will
move mountains and finances will help our team get over the Rockies to
Louisiana. The trip will cost about $600 for airfare, ground transportation,
some supplies and most meals. Since I am a poor, full time college student with
no current job, I will be raising what I can in the next few weeks. If you are
moved to support financially, please make the checks payable to “Campus Crusade
for Christ” by March 21, 2006. Ongoing prayers will be very much appreciated.
Thank you for sharing this experience with me and joining me in spirit to share
Christ’s compassion and heart for the people in Louisiana.
in Christ,
Ray Anne
